Research integrity and publication ethics training: the MRC Human Genetics Unit

Jane has provided online and in-person training workshops to the MRC Human Genetics Unit at the University of Edinburgh, for early career researchers and group leaders. These workshops aim to support attendees in their understanding of what constitutes good research practice, research leadership, and good publication practice in their respective roles and to stimulate discussions between lab leaders and research team members.

We have used Jane Alfred for both in person and online workshops focused on research integrity and publication ethics. Her deep knowledge of the research landscape both as a journal editor and as part of the UK research ethics community, coupled with her excellent presentation style, make her a very compelling workshop leader. Her workshops are informative, enjoyable and interactive.

Jane took the time before the workshops to discuss our needs with myself and a range of researchers, and understand our local processes to support research integrity and research good practice, which helped to tailor workshops to our needs.

She supported our group leaders to participate in a workshop, which was both educational and an opportunity for us to reflect on how our local practices may affect research culture and integrity, leading to some suggested policy changes. Feedback from participants from student to professorial level has been uniformly positive.

We have also used Jane as a consultant for issues relating to publication ethics and local policy and she has provided detailed and considered advice and guidance.

We highly recommend Jane as a resource for any research institution to examine practice, educate and motivate researchers, and to help to form policy to support excellent research culture and integrity.
