Peer review training: The Francis Crick Institute

Jane has been running annual peer review workshops for early career researchers and junior faculty at the Francis Crick Institute for several years. These workshops aim to equip researchers with the skills and knowledge they need to participate in peer review as responsible and constructive reviewers, to bring them up to date with recent developments in peer review models, and to provide advice on how to participate in peer review and gain credit for doing so. Dr James Briscoe, principal group leader at The Francis Crick Institute and Editor in Chief of Development, co-hosts these workshops with Jane and provides his expert input into the development of this workshop’s programme and its training materials.

It is a pleasure to work with Jane to train our staff at the Francis Crick Institute in the process and practice of peer review. Jane has used her years of experience in scientific publishing to develop training materials that are thorough and scholarly but grounded in the practical aspects of peer review. The course receives strongly positive feedback from the students, post-docs and staff that take it; many comment on how it has helped them build to confidence and demystify peer review. Jane regularly updates the course so that it covers the latest developments and innovations in peer review while retaining the core content and the emphasis on ethical and appropriate behaviour.

The [peer review] workshop was great - the most enjoyable and practically useful course done at the Crick thus far.
